NEW: GROUP FOR TEENS WITH EATING DISORDERS
Teenage and younger girls are caught in the cross-fire of peer approval, appearance focus, fears about the future, and their own morphing bodies. Many girls turn to food for comfort or herald dieting as the solution to these pressures. When binging or dieting become problematic, a teen needs help.
A group led by an eating disorder specialist gives a teen a safe place to talk about her fears, get support, learn ways to cope with problems and pressures, develop new behaviors, practice new skills, and implement healthy ways to care for herself
Teens can learn to:
* Talk about their feelings
* Practice non-food ways to cope
* Fight cultural prejudices about appearance
* Value themselves and their own unique qualities
* Set realistic goals

OTHER SERVICES OFFERED:
A thorough understanding of the issues and a specific plan to address your (or your loved one's) personal concerns is essential in order to provide appropriate and effective help.
I provide ASSESSMENT AND DIAGNOSIS, COLLABORATIVE TREATMENT, INDIVIDUAL THERAPY, FAMILY THERAPY, GROUPS and INTERVENTION.
My goal is to intervene to halt the inevitable course of physical, psychological, social and spiritual deterioration endemic to those suffering from food and weight issues or an eating disorder.
I see male and female teens and adults suffering from anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and other food-related or body image problems. My services include assessment and diagnosis of individuals with suspected food or weight issues or eating disorders, and individual and family therapy. I work collaboratively with other health care professionals to provide a consistent and comprehensive team approach.
I also lead groups for Mothers of Daughters with Eating Disorders, present workshops for Parents of Daughters with Eating Disorders and provide interventions in situations when family members are concerned about a loved one who is suffering from an eating disorder.
While females are more prone to develop eating disorders than males, males, whether a son, father, brother or husband, also suffer from problems with food and weight and from eating disorders and their pain is just as severe as that of females with these concerns. I work with males of all ages with food and weight issues.
ASSESSMENT and DIAGNOSIS
I conduct a thorough assessment to determine the nature and presence of a problem. With teens and young adults I meet with both the family and the individual. At the end of the assessment, you receive my treatment recommendations as well as specific collaborative referrals, when warranted.
COLLABORATIVE TREATMENT
Effective treatment of an individual recovering from an eating disorder requires medical and nutritional support in addition to psychotherapy. I collaborate with a number of physicians, psychiatrists, therapists and nutritionists in order to provide comprehensive treatment, and I engage in ongoing consultation with the other health professionals involved. I refer to twelve-step programs when appropriate. If either inpatient or intensive outpatient treatment is needed, I maintain communication with the treatment center staff to facilitate a smooth transition to and from the intensive setting.
INDIVIDUAL THERAPY
I meet with an individual recovering from an eating disorder one or more times each week. Individual therapy addresses behaviors, beliefs and feelings of the person, her/his relationship to her/himself and to others, and functioning in the world outside of therapy. My therapeutic tools include anxiety-reduction methods, addressing trauma, and cognitive, behavioral, relational and family systems approaches.
FAMILY THERAPY
Just as the individual with the eating disorder needs to heal, so too does the family. Families are usually eager to know how to support their loved one who is suffering from an eating disorder. Weekly family therapy, which includes the individual as well, provides a forum to educate and support family members, enhance communication, and begin to heal family relationships.
GROUP THERAPY
I lead groups for Mothers of Daughters with Eating Disorders. These groups offer mothers a unique opportunity to break the isolation they experience and learn how best to help their daughters heal while reclaiming their own lives. For more information on groups for mothers, click here.
INTERVENTION
Intervention is a process of educating and supporting family members, friends and others impacted by an individual's eating disorder. An intervention may be the appropriate choice when the fear, worry or concern about the person with the eating disorder impacts the family's quality of life. My model of intervention is invitational with the focus on understanding the consequences of the eating disorder and offering options for relief and recovery both for the individual with the eating disorder and for each other person affected by the situation.
